Swimming Pools - Keeping cool in summer, exercising, or looking for learn- to-swim?
Poowong has the only swimming pool of the three villages, comprising a 33 metre public swimming pool, and a shaded toddler’s pool. Lessons are available in season. It is generally open (weather permitting) from late November/early December until mid- March each year, on days when temperature is forecast for 23 degrees or above. Opening days are based on the Leongatha forecast on the Bureau of Meteorology website by 6:00pm on the day prior. Phone 5659 2228, or check community Facebooks for latest updates in season. Other pools in the District are open, generally all-year. These include
    • Leongatha, (25 metre indoor heated public hall and toddlers pool all year). Contact 5662 5911
    • Korumburra (15 metre heated indoor private (booking only 5655 1681, all year) and 50 metre public outdoor open in warmer weather – similar to Poowong. Contact 5655 1603.
Outside the Shire, Warragul, Drouin and Wonthaggi also have Leisure centres or pools, with all-weather heating.

Karate in Nyora. Ishinryu is one type of karate and a great way to exercise mind and body. It’s especially suitable for kids. Classes operate from the Nyora Public Hall in Henley Street on Monday and Wednesdays for ages 6 years to adults. Contact number is Robert Wiseman - $30 annually).

Tai Chi at Loch Bowls Club. Breathe, stretch, relax and feel energised with Allana, who guides us through gentle exercises every Monday at 10.30am. At no cost to Bowling Club members. Call Allana or email.

Yoga at the Loch Bowls Club, Tuesdays at 7pm, with Chris Hayes. First session free, then $20 per session. Send Chris a text for more info.

Skateboard Parks. Open any time of the year. There are two in the area – at Nyora in the Village Square and at Loch, next to the Sunnyside Park and the RailTrail tunnel.

Poowong Twinkle Toes Dancing. Under the enthusiastic guidance of Sarah Williams, novices and more experienced locals have fun learning and attempting mixed dancing (old-time, ballroom, tango, rock and roll etc). Cost $5. Tuesday nights from 7-9pm in the Poowong Community Hall.

On Clarence in Loch is an artists collective and a contact point for artists, micro-businesses and sole traders newly moved into the area. Studios, pop-ups and social days. Just around the corner from the main street in Clarence St. Check out their website at www.onclarence.com.au.
